The Keaau High School Band
In the heart of Puna on the Big Island of Hawai`i, Kea`au High School Band has been performing and entertaining the community since the school was opened in the year 1999. Originally under the direction of Wayne Kawakami, Lee Ikeda who has just finished his fourth year teaching and directing now heads the Cougar Band. Under Mr. Ikeda’s tenure at Keaau High School the band the band has grown from 19 members in 2005, to 50 members in 2009. The band travels around the island and the state to share their music, including tours of the southern most point of the United States and Oahu. Members have been apart of such groups as the Hawai`i All State Marching Band and The Hawai`I County Band. The band looks to travel to the mainland and internationally in the future. The band will also continure to grow because of the success of Mrs. Kuulei Arceo, the director of the Kea`au Middle School Band.
About Band Director Lee ikeda
Lee Ikeda was born and raised in Hilo on the Big Island of Hawai`i. During his time in high school he was fortunate enough to have Dr. George Durham, former tuba player with the President’s Own and Paul Arceo, current Hawai`i County Band director as mentors. Mr. Ikeda attended the University of Hawai`I at Manoa and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. Mr. Ikeda was able to play and learn in many ensembles while at UH Manoa including; Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Concert Choir, Jazz Band, and many other groups. He excelled at tuba playing under his teachers Dave Saltzman and Jerome Stover. While in college he also taught at Mid Pacific High School, Honolulu Waldorf School, and Aiea High School Marching Band. He also had the opportunity to play in the Royal Hawaiian Band and many other ensembles around the state. Mr. Ikeda currently resides at home in Hilo and keeps himself busy as principal tuba in the Hawai`i County Band and playing lots of video games.
